What tennis and golfer’s elbow mean
Tennis elbow usually refers to lateral pain on the outside of the joint; golfer’s elbow to medial pain on the inside. Other nerve, joint or referred problems can cause similar symptoms.
The location and pattern matter: pain on the inner and outer elbow can have different contributors. Assessment does not assume every elbow complaint is a tendon problem.
How activity and load may matter
More gripping, lifting, racquet use, manual work or repetition may be relevant. Recovery time, technique, equipment or work demands can affect manageable load, but do not prove one activity caused damage.
Permanent grip avoidance is not automatic. Depending on assessment, changes to task time, load or breaks may help while strength develops. Adjustments depend on work, sport, symptoms and health.
Recovery and return to tasks
Elbow symptoms can vary with arm use. Recovery is individual; no fixed timeline or result can be promised. Follow-up can review grip, lifting, work or sport and adjust loading or assessment.
If a task repeatedly flares symptoms, a clinician can consider a temporary change and graded return. The plan should be safe and fit your priorities, not require every sensation to disappear first.
Grip and forearm tasks that may be affected
Holding a mug, opening a jar, turning a key, carrying a bag, using a mouse or repeating a sport movement may hurt. Pain-related grip changes do not prove a tear. Stiffness, swelling, tingling or instability may suggest another issue.
Describe the affected arm, symptom location, aggravating tasks and whether onset followed injury. Numbness, hand weakness or symptoms beyond the elbow need assessment.
How individualized physiotherapy may help
Assessment may include symptom history, elbow and wrist movement, grip or forearm strength, nerve screening and tasks that matter to you. We would distinguish lateral from medial pain and consider other causes; findings outside physiotherapy scope may need medical review.
For appropriate lateral elbow tendinopathy, care may include education, load management and progressive strengthening. Exercise choice and progression depend on your presentation and response. With inner-elbow pain, assessment considers other possible causes before choosing activity or strengthening advice.
What an in-home elbow visit can address
A home visit may let us review a household task such as lifting a kettle, carrying laundry, opening a door or using a home workstation, if it is safe and relevant. For work tasks, an employer report or other written deliverable needs to be discussed and confirmed in advance; it is not automatically part of a standard visit.
Virtual physiotherapy may be appropriate for some needs when you are physically in Ontario during the appointment.
When to get further medical advice
Seek prompt review after significant trauma, a visible deformity, sudden major loss of movement, a hot swollen joint with fever, or new numbness or progressive weakness in the hand. A sudden inability to use the arm or symptoms that are worsening quickly may need medical assessment before physiotherapy.
Persistent symptoms that do not match a typical tendon pattern, or symptoms involving the neck, hand or nervous system, should be reassessed by an appropriate clinician.
Questions about tennis and golfer’s elbow
Do I need to play tennis or golf to have these problems?
No. The names describe common symptom areas, not a requirement to play those sports. Work and everyday gripping can also be relevant.
Are tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow the same?
They usually refer to pain on different sides of the elbow. A clinician can assess which area is affected and whether another cause should be considered.
Should I stop all gripping?
Not automatically. A clinician can help adjust load or task duration and plan a gradual progression that fits your symptoms and work or home needs.
Can numbness be part of tennis elbow?
Tingling or numbness can have other causes and should be assessed, particularly if it travels into the hand or occurs with weakness.
Can you assess my work setup?
A workstation review may be discussed in eligible GTA areas or by video in Ontario. Employer reports and other deliverables require advance confirmation.
